Longview Street bump outs

Can anyone identify one positive aspect for the general public of the new bump outs in the streets of Longview? If we accept that roads are intended to facilitate the movement of people and goods, then the bump outs fail the test because:

  • They hamper making right hand turns on red lights

  • They hamper long vehicles (AKA trucks) from making right turns safely

  • They endanger the cyclist who now is squeezed into traffic; riding on the sidewalk is far more dangerous for several reasons

If we accept that money is a scarce resource, the bump outs fail the test of prudent use of money:

  • We have pot holes and rough surface on 15th avenue that should have been fixed instead

  • We now have vegetation that requires constant maintenance, hence the long term fixed costs have now been increased
