“It is proper to take alarm at the first experiment on our liberties. We hold this prudent jealousy to be the first duty of citizens and one of the noblest characteristics of the late Revolution. The freemen of America did not wait till usurped power had strengthened itself by exercise and entangled the question in precedents.” (James Madison,Letters and Other Writings of James Madison, 1:163. 1785.)
Experience
Public Sector:
-
Cowlitz County Commissioner 2016 to 2020.
Private Sector:
It is essential that a commissioner understands the various aspects of the departments in the County, and it is here where my experience gives the public a great leverage. I bring to the commissioner’s office a holistic understanding of the real world, from technology to human resources to culture.
-
Extensive managerial experience – I have managed many organizations, some comprised of as many as 150 people. I have worked closely with HR and, over the years, I have interviewed more than 1,000 people for a variety of positions from secretary to senior director.
-
Extensive project experience – I have managed many projects; the largest one was valued at over $250 million.
-
Environmental experience – as a Staff Oceanographer at EG&G Environmental Consultants, I worked on Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) and data analysis. Too many popular but unfounded claims about the environment are used to sway public policy.
-
Technical experience – I have extensive formal education in science and extensive experience in engineering.
Ethics
Our founding fathers were very clear that the success of our system of government depends on a moral people. With keys to public tax roles and with opportunities to influence special interests or be influenced by special interests, elected representatives must exhibit moral virtues of the highest caliber.
My moral compass is based on the following fundamental concepts:
-
Public money is not my money
-
Individual rights not directly in conflict with the rights of another individual must be protected
-
The trust of the people must not be violated
-
Public service is not for personal gain
“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” (John Adams, October 11, 1798.)
Below are promises I make to you easily because they follow from my moral compass.
-
I will protect individual liberty and property rights from government intrusion
-
I will not lie to the public
-
I will not hide ("tough") issues from the public
-
I will be transparent in public matters
